Over the past few months I’ve been working on the new Chrome Editor App for the Google Web Apps Store.

So far it’s been interesting building an app on the Google Chrome Dev application environment since things seem to change pretty frequently.

If you’ve used the Chrome Editor Extension in the past there are many new features and very slick new user interface coming soon to the Chrome Editor App version. I feel this project is becoming much more exciting than I ever imagined.

If you’re wondering how to get the new Chrome Editor App it’s not possible yet since I’m waiting for the Google Web App store to launch because it doesn’t exist yet. The news from Google was it was coming in the Fall of ’10. The Chrome Editor App is a download through the Chrome Web Store which Google is working on as I post this very entry. It is a store where you can buy new and exciting Apps for the Chrome Browser. Some will be paid, and some will be free. I’m not sure about the fine print just yet as Google updates Chrome and its details very often.

So far functionality of Chrome Editor App is subject to change as well as the user interface. I do think that the app version has a lot of cool new features that developers can find even more useful.

I can now support more than one language, using “sets” of libraries of code references. Right now I have sets for (HTML4, HTML5, Blueprint CSS, PHP, Actionscript , and Javascript) the language snippets are subject to change as well as the keystrokes to access them.

The new save to desktop feature lets you save out your (.html, .js, .as, and .css) files to your desktop so you can upload them to a web server or for later reference.

The new full screen preview button allows you to preview the page in a new tab with Chrome’s rendering capability.

There are also themes for Chrome Editor to make your coding experience more fun. So far I have made a few fun ones like (Warp Zone, Dark Side of the Moon, and Chrome Alternate.)

These are just a few advanced previews on the new Chrome Editor App. I hope you’re as excited as I am about the future of this project and what might be next down the line.

If you’re excited about Chrome Editor you can try out the Chrome Editor Extension for free right now built for Chrome Beta Click Here.

Round #1 Video

Flash Video was probably one of the most widely used features in Flash. It loaded pretty fast as long as you have the right version of the plugin. The downside was the hardware on your computer would heat up and the only way to create a Flash video player would be to buy Adobe’s Flash.

HTML5 however is free opensource and easy to implement. It requires a place to host your video file, and multiple video files due to browser standards being different currently. In the next year or two everything may use it. The downside is there is no security to your video files, and there isn’t a way to make it all work with one file type the way Flash works.

The Winner is Flash- Do to standards being different and the way the web is currently set up right now it is hard to implement HTML5 video. I think in a year or two it may become the default standard for web video for a number of reasons, but right now Flash is the better option.

Round #2 Canvas

Flash has the ability to let you draw using drawing API’s and classes.

HTML5 has about the same functionality as Flash on this one except it uses the canvas tag exporting to .SVG which is opensource and stretchable as it scales nicely in a window.

The Winner is HTML5- Making things opensource and render quickly is what HTML5 does well. I’ve seen some amazing drawing apps using the canvas. It is easy and amazing what you can do and the future looks to be very bright. However with Flash you can make Adobe Air offline apps as well, but I still like the load time of HTML5 over Flash on this one.

Round #3 Web Apps

Flash has a platform called Adobe Air which is the offline desktop version of flash. It was revolutionary at the time but I think it’s usefulness has gone down, and it has to be updated constantly to meet the new requirement in the flash player plugin. Flash also has the Android platform and mobile Flashlite platform which is very cool to see mobile websites that use Flash.

HTML5 however has a lot of built in features that doesn’t require a lot of updates because it’s built into the browser. It utilizes javascript speed and local storage as well as geolocation for devices and is very simple to learn and is open source. Apple has been adopting these standards as well as Microsoft. It appears to be the future of the web browser.

The Winner is HTML5- It really seems to be trending right now and I’m kind of blown away by the development projects based on HTML5. It’s free and easy to learn there should be more websites that use these new features. I think it will trend higher over time. Plus I haven’t seen any cool Android Flash things that really top any of the HTML5 things. Although I probably wouldn’t know it was flash on a mobile phone anyway.

Round #4 Adoption

Flash has been around a long time. It’s more popular than Windows Media Player, Silverlight, and Quicktime. Flash is on around 96% of all desktop computers. It was the largest interactive platform online. It compresses images nicely and loads fast. It makes up pretty much all the online video and interactive banner ads online today.

HTML5 is the new kid on the block. The long road ahead looks to be very bright and interesting. Knowing more about the future and adoption rate is an unknown at this point. Maybe by the time HTML5 is used widely among all websites we will have HTML6 which might have even more browser capabilities like drag and drop and save to desktop.

The Winner is Flash- It really isn’t even close at this point. Mostly because the world still uses Internet Explorer exclusively and it doesn’t support HTML5 standards yet. Flash is the older competitor and has more sites backing it. For what you can do with Flash there really wasn’t much of any competitor to it for a long time. It probably has Adobe shaking in it’s boots.

So Basically those were my list of positive and negative aspects of HTML5 vs. Flash. I hope you enjoyed some of the things you may not have known. Please leave a comment below.

I wrote a long time ago in a short tweet that HTML is visually pretty similar to a Hamburger.

I am going to attempt to explain this in more detail for the beginners.

<html> – The Bun Layer

<title> – The Ketchup / Sauce Layer – </title>

<head> – The Pickel Layer – </head>

<body> – The Onion Layer

<h1> – The Meat Layer – </h1>

<p> – The Tomato Layer – </p>

</body> – The Lettuce Layer

</html> – The Bottom Bun Layer

HTML has been around since the early 1990′s and has come a long way. I do tend to be a more visual learner, and enjoy studying code and programming techniques.

I’ve been teaching interns and co-workers the basics of HTML 4 and how the <tags> open and close I go back and fourth between the code view and the visual view a lot trying to show how to grasp the concept of where things are laid out in code and visually show on the screen.

Hopefully you enjoyed the visual example above. Please leave your comments below.

The web browser today seems almost more important than the operating system you use since most browsers are on more than one platform. I ran some speed tests a couple of weeks ago.

These speed stats were what I found.

#1 Opera 10.53 – 299.2ms
#2 Chrome 5.0.375.38 beta – 308.0ms
#3 FireFox 3.6 – 727.4ms

Opera is used by less than 2% of the internet. Yet it has the fastest performance online. They also have very fast mobile web browsing. I have been using it more frequently, but I do seem to use Google’s Chrome as my default web browser. As for Firefox is still a fun browser, but it takes twice as long to get a page to load compared to Chrome and Opera so it isn’t my ideal browser of choice anymore.

I was using firefox pretty much exclusively for the last 2 to 3 years. I liked how fast it was and the extensions there were, and the large community behind Firefox, but I tried Chrome Beta for a week back in Jan or Feb and I liked it so much that I’m using it all the time now. The extensions are just as good if not better than Firefox’s and the load time with the extensions is still pretty amazing. Google really knows what they are doing.

I know some of you are probably thinking how can you mention web browsers without mentioning the gremlin called Internet Explorer. Well I’ll tell you how come I didn’t mention it. It’s slow outdated and not as useful as it was back in 2002-2003. I do however use IE8 for developing for the IE people. I also use microsoft’s expressions for the web so I test backwards compatibility for IE7 and IE6. So it’s not too bad dealing with the older internet people. All IE users are probably used to a slower internet experience anyway.

I might get more excited about IE9 when it comes out. It appears to be in a rough state right now. I haven’t really messed around with the IE9 beta. I actually don’t use windows anymore at home, as I have a mac computer, and a linux based netbook.

The Chrome blog Blog.Chromium.org is a valuable place for learning about the new enhancements and features about to Google’s Chrome browser.

This news is particularly interesting, because I can possible offer a more advanced “Chrome Editor” for a small price to buy.

Of course new features will be added more support for Operating Systems, and possibly more user feedback.

I do have some exciting ideas, and now that my “Chrome Editor” extensions has over 1,100 users. This could finally be a great opportunity to make some development money on a project that I thought wouldn’t make a dime in return.

Gosh this is exciting, tell your friends cause Google Chrome is about to get more and more exciting. Who knows what kind of apps will be sold in the Web Apps Store.

All I know is I happened to master making Chrome Extensions and the idea of expanding my options and dedication more time to the project would be fun, especially if I could make some money while doing it.

As I keep adding features to the Chrome Editor project it seems the guys at google have noticed this, and have nicely featured my extension at the top of the Web Development category page. I feel so honored to have the top slot on the page.

Google is such a unique company and I really have become addicted to their web browser as it is the default browser I use now, and I have found I seem to hate the functionality of most HTML editors. Most people who install Chrome who might want to build web pages I would recommend trying the new Chrome Editor it is simple and easy to write code.

Thank you Google and the 790 users for installing my Chrome Extension.

In life things happen in three’s.

You may find a dollar on the street, then get a free lunch the next day by accident at your favorite lunch eatery, and the following day you might be walking home and get the walk sign along your whole trip and just make the train right when you were hoping to.

Is this all by coincidence?

Well I don’t think so. I just think that my streaks happen in three’s. After the streak is over it may take awhile for another one to come back.

I think the internet has some similarities to “my rule of 3′s” if there are more than three links my eyes tend to blur them out. If there are more than three related posts I blur them out, if there are more than three comments I tend not to read and further.

Well just think about it we get we trained ourselves to read when is relevant to our topic of interest. It is more than likely you won’t even read this much of my post here.

If your website has more content than a header, body, and nav it can be difficult to find what the purpose of being here might be.

Trends I see online is that it can be very hard arranging content in a readable fashion that can feature advertisements and related posts in such limited space on one page. I’ve seen sites I visit daily play around with their sub page layout constantly for social media features and related links. It kind of makes me sick because I can’t stand the layouts at times.

With all these sub page redesigns I think there should be a theme among good designs, but I think they change so frequently that it really is hard to judge what is good and bad when it changes to often.

A good sub design utilizes it’s space and links for the spot on the page, and doesn’t clutter images or advertisements. You want to think of related content almost like the content it’s self because it can get you more page time and higher click through rates, and might attract returning traffic.

Just finished the updates to the new BucketShare! Mobile framework. This is very exciting, because it actually looks like my intended vision is actually happening.

If you don’t know about BucketShare! it’s a social networking website that is for completing things you want to accomplish in one lifespan.

As you complete them, you can cross them off your profile fields, just as if it was a virtually bucket list of things you want to do.

I’m currently waiting for Apple’s approval to the iPhone Web Apps feature page which is exciting because the site might take off with many new mobile users. BucketShare! is an exciting way to meet other who may have a common interest in doing something they haven’t tried yet.

Since launching the site back in 2008, I’ve been able to say I’ve tried Sushi and Beef Jerkey, and been to Paul Revere’s House, JFK Library, and I plan on trying indoor rock climbing in the future because I’ve been pretty busy.

I was hoping to attract more active members that update their profile with exciting things they might want to try.

I do know that there are a lot of mobile sites / apps that feature updating and posting and community sharing in similar fashion.

This site is different in the sense your sharing data of things you want to do, or things you might want to try.

I always come up with interesting ideas of things I would like to jot down for later use or memory. It would be incredibly useful to have somewhere I could check back in semi-frequently to update or revisit just to try to accomplish those goals.

In time the genius developers have found a simple solution through open source code projects to build iPhone apps using technology that the web is powered by today.

Since the iPhone platform came out I’ve been thinking about building something just to understand how it works and see how Apps can be made and designed.

I already understand HTML, CSS, and JS and don’t really want to spend the time and effort learning the Coco and Objective C- language.

When I saw that some developers have started building Apps using HTML5 and other languages it really excited me that I could make something cool. I was actually waiting for Adobe’s CS5 which supported Flash output for iPhone to come out, but since Apple shot down Adobe’s software I have decided to build an App based off of web code.

Brainstorming.

An iPhone app to my knowledge using the Jqtouch and Phone Gap method pretty static using HTML with calls for the web through form action and external javascript api (json calls)

It looks pretty simple to make a book or some kind of static maybe resume app with a form that calls the internet to post data somewhere.

I’m not quite sure yet how to update or load a feed through JSON or Jqtouch frame work.

I’m considering buying building native iphone appsJonathan Stark’s book by O’reilly.

Any comments / solutions or ideas, leave one below.
